The International friendship day is celebrated every year on the first Sunday in the month of August.People share friendship SMS to symbolize their love for each other.The history of friendship day is way back in 1935 when the American government killed a person for breaching the law.This event happened on the first Saturday of August.The next day his friend committed suicide.The US government was sympathized by this incident and declared first Sunday of August as friendship day.
Friendship day is now a major event in many countries including US and India.In India friendship bands are very famous and with the advent of technology friendship day is celebrated in social networking sites like Facebook,Orkut etc.

Interesting story about the history of friendship day, but I doubt it's true.
Out of about 15 websites I went to looking for the history, this is the only one that mentioned this story.
Also, in the U.S. if you commit a crime the U.S. govt does not punish you; the individual state does. If you murder someone in Texas then the U.S. govt does not put you to death; Texas does. The only exception is for people who commit acts of war or espionage against the U.S. in which case I doubt our govt felt sorry enough to create a holiday.
